Having worked with organisations across various sectors I have experienced that at the heart of a professional IT organisation lies a crucial part: the dynamic interplay between business and IT.
Nowadays, most organisations work agile, mostly in their development teams. Next to developers, these teams consist of product owners and customer specialists who represent client needs and determine what can be built for the customer. Not only in development teams but also in other areas, business and IT can strengthen their cooperation. An example is the working of a collective portfolio management process, where the allocation of available budget and priorities is decided. These strategic priorities stem from the business strategy and serve as a useful guideline for all teams within the organisation.
In addition to enhancing the collaboration between business and IT, maintaining a regular open dialogue on progress from both business and technology is crucial. This ensures that both parties take responsibility for efficient delivery and results. It is necessary that both departments communicate effectively and understand each other's work, as almost all products and services of an organisation have a digital component. It is no longer viable to organise IT and business separately. Often these dialogues come together in an obeya, or in regular meetings between business and IT parties.
In summary, the key to optimising (IT) production lies in nurturing a culture of #collaboration and effective #communication between IT and business, as underscored by the following principles:
